Side effects of dental veneer placement

side effects of dental veneer placement

Today, we see more enthusiasm in people to use dental veneers. If placement of dental veneers is not done correctly, there would be some serious side effects against the gums and the teeth, even sometimes the teeth would loosen or fall. Generally, side effects caused by improper placement of dental veneers are able to be divided into two general divisions: gum diseases and dental damages.

Gum diseases caused by improper placement of dental veneers

Gums are composed of a set of supportive or so-called fixing tissues which hold firm teeth in their places. In this disease, the supportive and fixing tissues of the teeth are invaded and as the disease progresses, it would lead to tooth loosening.

For various reasons including improper placement of the dental veneers, bacteria may invade and hurt the mentioned tissues, which in turn may lead to tooth loosening. You need to know that such bacteria have already existed in your mouth, but when they are placed beneath the dental veneers, they will hurt your gums and teeth.

Generally, there are two common diseases for gums: Gingivitis and Periodontitis. Both of which  are caused by bacterial secretions.

1- Gingivitis

Gingivitis actually is the inflammation of the protective tissues around the teeth, which is often  caused as a result of ignoring oral and dental hygiene instructions. Gingivitis is a common disease whose main cause is the accumulation of dental plaques across the gum line. It begins when the food particles are mixed with the saliva and bacteria starts to produce a type of plaque. This plaque sticks into the dental surfaces. Both plaques and caries are riddled with the detrimental bacteria which must be removed quickly, otherwise they will stimulate the gums and develop gingivitis. Most important symptom of gingivitis is swollen and bleeding gums, which easily start to bleed by brushing and/or flossing. Moreover, recession of gums from where the teeth are located, accumulation of plaques between gums and the teeth, bad breath and malocclusion of teeth are amongst other symptoms of gingivitis.

2- Periodontitis

If Gingivitis is left untreated it would progress from the gums to the bones, thus periodontitis develops. If the dental plaques are not removed through brushing and flossing, they will become minerals and plaques. Removing dental plaques is a very difficult task and only can be removed through specialized dental scaling in a dentistry office. The infected bones beneath the gums lead to recession of gums and bones, and then there will be a gap between gums and the teeth, which in turn leads to development of some deep pockets on gums. Since cleaning such pockets is extremely difficult, they will become spots for accumulation of plaques and bacteria and pave the way for more recession and decay of bones. Eventually, as the gum disease progresses and more tissues are recessed, the tooth gets to loosen and falls after a while.

Dental problems caused by the improper placement of dental veneers

Improper placement of dental veneers may result in certain dental problems including tooth decay, damaged dental nerves and dental malocclusion.

Problems caused by the tooth decay under dental veneers

If the dental veneer is installed on a rotten tooth, even with a little rot, the rot would eventually progress under the veneer and cause some serious damages to the tooth and even its root. Finally the patient would lose their teeth for good. Since when you use a dental veneer, the tiny rots which were already visible will be hidden beneath the veneer and nobody can see them anymore. They will become more annoying for you when they have been extended to the root and have caused toothache. Although given the severity of the damages to the tooth some remedies can be done, but mostly it would be very late to conduct any useful action. Sometimes, this delay in treatment would impose many problems and hefty expenses to the patient.

The damaged dental nerve due to losing the tooth enamel after shaving down

Before installing dental veneers, your dentist needs to shave down a part of your tooth enamel, so after installing the dental veneer, the veneer will be placed in a same level. If the tooth enamel is shaved down too much, when the veneer was installed it will be vulnerable to pain and sensitivity caused by cold or hot drinks and foods, because it’s enamel has been damaged and even removed. A damaged tooth enamel would increase the potential of more risks against the tooth nerves, as after a while the patient has no choice but repairing their tooth root and veneering it again.

Sometimes people would fail to put their teeth on each other easily for several days after placing new dental veneers, but they need to know that this problem is normal for the first several days, and it will be removed automatically. However, if it does not solve after a few days, or you feel pain when you put your teeth on each other, in these cases you need to visit your therapist in order to solve your problem.

Preventing the side effects caused by improper placement of dental veneers

The most important measure for preventing the side effects caused by an improper placement of dental veneers is following preventive guidelines and instructions, which help your dentist to repair your tooth with veneers in the best possible way; otherwise, you may have no choice but removing all veneers in order to be able to repair the problems under them.

To prevent side effects of dental veneers, there are a set of measures which must be followed before, during and after placement of veneers. Measures before and during installing veneers need to be done by a specialized dentist. The most important of which are removing rots and scaling where the veneers are supposed to be placed, and also following necessary care upon shaving the enamel and placing the veneers. The experienced dentists and therapists start to scale the teeth and or filling the rotten teeth before launching the dental veneers’ placement process. In most cases, when the tooth health checkup is not completed properly,  often the patient will suffer from consequences of the former rots, after using dental veneers.

Usually an OPG image, which indicates all rots and decays of the teeth, is prescribed for patients, if the tooth in question has a minor decay, which cannot be seen with the naked eye of dentists. After taking the OPG image, the dentist starts to reform and finally to scale the tooth in question. After these steps, you can start your dental veneer placement treatment without any concerns. Besides what mentioned above, using the best substances and visiting an experienced and skillful dentist would make sure that you will have a successful treatment. Therefore, you need to study and research before doing this important procedure and consider the history and achievements of your potential therapist. While the costs of dental veneers are important, the first priority must be maintaining the tooth health and choosing a skillful dentist in order to prevent extra expenses due to treating the potential gum diseases and/or repairing your veneers.

Following installing veneers, to increase the longevity and prevent subsequent consequences in long-term, regular periodic examinations by the specialized dentists are necessary to make sure about the health of veneers and the teeth.

Likewise, following oral and dental hygiene instructions, using dental floss and brushing properly along with keeping periodic dentistry examinations can guarantee the health of your veneers and teeth in the long-term and will provide you with healthy teeth and a bright and attractive smile.
