Dr. Abolreza Jamilian, orthodontist and orthodontics surgery fellow at the European board of orthodontics and associate professor in recent years, has patented three inventions in the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which will be briefly explained as follows. Dr. Abdolreza Jamilian’s first invention was patented on April 9, 2013 with patent number US8414291 B1, titled “Method and System for Treatment of Maxillary Deficiency Using Miniscrews.” One of the problems of orthodontic patients is the maxillary hypoplasia. Reference books commonly use a large external oral appliance called the Facemask to treat maxillary deficiency.

This disorder is known as class 3 malocclusion. The Face Mask is a large appliance that is used outside the mouth. Patients do not adequately cooperate in using external oral appliances, and those wearing eyeglasses or using this appliance in the summer face numerous problems.

The Face Mask Appliance’s pad causes skin irritation and itching on the chin and the forehead alongside perspiration beneath the pads. This problem and the large size and external appearance of the face mask prevents some patients from using it. This problem lead orthodontist Dr. Jamilian to invent a small oral internal orthodontics appliance for treating maxillary hypoplasia. It’s much easier for patients to use the oral internal appliance instead of the oral external appliance. Failure to use the oral external appliance will leave the patient’s problem untreated.

The introduction of small implants called Mini Screws to dentistry inspired this invention. In this method, small implants are placed in the anterior mandible in the canine tooth area, and a removable plaque is placed atop the maxilla. These implants are connected to the maxilla using orthodontic elastics and the pressure imposed to the removable maxillary plaque by the elastics pulls the maxilla forward.
