Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect s of elastomeric chains exposure to artificial saliva, Orthokin®, and Oral B® solutions.

Materials and Methods: 100 elastomeric chains from one manufacturer were chosen for this study. Each of the chains had 6 loops. 10 chains were tested at room conditions. The other 90 chains were divided into 3 equal groups and were stretched to twice their original lengths with the help of customized jigs. Afterwards, they were placed in different solutions. 10 samples were tested for their force decay at different intervals of 24 hours, 7 and 28 days. One way and two way ANOVA and Tukey test were used for evaluation of the data.

Results:

The tensile strength of no intervention group significantly reduced after exposure to 3 solutions. Surprisingly, the tensile strength of all three groups increased after 7 days of intervention while it decreased after 28 days. Tukey test showed that these three solutions did not have any statistically significant differences among each other in the first two intervals; however, significant reductions were seen in the last interval. (P<0.001)

Conclusion:

The time of exposure was found to be more effective on force decay than type of the solutions.
