Rhinoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic procedures in Iran today. This cosmetic procedure is used to solve various problems and its ultimate goal is to create a fit and beauty between the components of the face and nose, which ultimately improves the appearance of the person.

One of the most important questions that arises for different people is the right time for rhinoplasty and orthodontics. Sometimes people ask if rhinoplasty takes precedence over orthodontics if there is a problem, or vice versa, or whether these two operations can be performed simultaneously. To answer these questions, I draw your attention to the following.

Some people believe that orthodontics only arranges and beautifies the teeth, but this is just plain wrong. Orthodontics is an expertise that protects the oral cavity and ensures its health and function. Orthodontics mainly keeps healthy the initial part of the gastrointestinal tract, the mouth. Ensuring oral health makes the gastrointestinal tract healthy, and oral cavity health risks endanger the health of the entire gastrointestinal tract. Ensuring that the oral cavity is healthy also creates beauty. Moving the jaws and placing teeth in the suitable position makes the lower part of the face beautiful and corrects the smile line, lip form, and distance between the nose and the chin.

Is orthodontic treatment a priority over rhinoplasty or vice versa?

Rhinoplasty is performed for two purposes. In the first case, the presence of a medical problem, such as a fracture or deviation in the nose, causes the person to have to undergo nose surgery. In the second case, the person has no medical problems and is only dissatisfied with the appearance of his nose and performs rhinoplasty in order to make it fit and more beautiful.

In general, orthodontics should be done first so that the jaw is in the right area and then the nose is operated until the nose is on the right jaw. In other words, the nose should be placed on the correct structure so orthodontics takes precedence over rhinoplasty.

The effect of orthodontics on nose surgery

Orthodontics is a means to correct the structure of the jaws and teeth’s arrangement inside the mouth. One of the issues which leads to a dental and maxillofacial abnormality in people is a nasal problem and breathing through the mouth. In this type of condition and due to such different reasons as nose deviation, the person has to breathe through the mouth and this results in the upper jaw’s tightness and teeth’s disordered arrangement.

Along with its therapeutic purposes and improving the health of the mouth and teeth, orthodontics increases the beauty and symmetry between different parts of the face. Furthermore, fixing the jaws and the teeth in the mouth causes the appearance of the lower side of the face to change. One of the essential points for a nose surgery is the balance between the nose and such parts as the mouth and teeth. Leading to a quite complicated relationship between those two.

Due to rhinoplasty being often performed during adulthood, limited dental and maxillofacial changes can be done at that age. Also, most of the orthodontic treatments are recommended during childhood in order to reach the best result. Thus, orthodontics and the final formation of lips’ shape and jaws’ size may be initially necessary to achieve the best and the most balanced results from rhinoplasty.

Is it possible to do rhinoplasty and orthodontics simultaneously?

One of the most common questions by those patients who intend to do rhinoplasty and orthodontics is whether to do rhinoplasty sooner or the orthodontic treatment?

Patients should know that because orthodontics is able to affect the form and position of the lips by moving teeth, they had better finish their orthodontic treatment first and after the position of the lips and jaws is fixed, they can do rhinoplasty. One of the significant points regarding rhinoplasty that the surgeon will consider for the final shape of your nose is its relationship with your lips (pay attention that orthodontics changes your lips’ form). Also, it is possible that through the orthodontics treatment your nose is exposed to pressure by the orthodontist. So, it is recommended that you do the rhinoplasty after the orthodontics. Finally it is recommended that you consult your orthodontist before rhinoplasty.
