Orthodontics in one-session

We human beings love cosmetics and the way we look, which includes the beauty of our teeth. Instead of undergoing the proper treatment options such as orthodontics, some patients with protruded, chipped, crowded, or malpositioned teeth may prefer to undergo inefficient methods wrongly labelled as one-session orthodontics by some orthodontists. Unaware of the disadvantages and damages caused by one-session orthodontic treatments, such patients easily endanger their teeth’s health. This article hopes to raise the patients’ awareness and help them choose the best treatment option.

Differences between routine orthodontics and orthodontics in one-session

Orthodontics is the most principled and the rightest option for the treatment of malocclusions or maxillofacial abnormalities. Orthodontic treatments can move teeth entirely correctly and principled over time by affecting the tooth crown and the tooth root. As a result, their teeth and jaws will be in their natural position, and all malocclusions or maxillofacial abnormalities will be corrected at the end of the treatment. Such a treatment plan will last in the whereabouts of 1-2 years.

One-session orthodontics is not an orthodontic treatment but is wrongly called one-session orthodontics. In this treatment, a general dentist restores an intruded tooth to look forward and trims the protruded tooth’s enamel to look backward. This is not the proper procedure as it causes the loss of tooth enamel. On the other hand, the restorative materials added to the tooth may be detached or discolored over time. This is never an orthodontic treatment but is simply a cheat of orthodontics. As a blessing given to humans by God only once, trimming the enamel is considered irreparable damage to teeth. The restorative materials also remain on the tooth permanently. Therefore, it seems illogical to replace the tooth enamel with a restorative material.

Disadvantages of one-session orthodontics

One-session orthodontics can seriously damage the enamel. Trimming or adding restorative materials to a tooth affects the tooth’s most important part, called the tooth enamel. Adding tooth-colored materials destroys the tooth pulp and enamel. The restorative materials may wear out and be detached over time. Enamel trimming can also increase the risk of tooth destruction and tooth decay.

One-session orthodontics from a real orthodontist perspective

An honest orthodontist undoubtedly rejects any method for aligning and levelling teeth very quickly to produce short-term and superficial results. Real orthodontic treatments cannot be performed in only one session. Based on the type of malocclusions, complete orthodontic treatment planned by the orthodontist for each client usually takes more than several months.
After countless studies, orthodontists believe that one-session orthodontics are not a solid alternative for patients having insufficient time or tolerance for a complete orthodontic treatment plan. One-session orthodontics may provide clients with a short-term beauty of the smile but negatively affect their oral health in the long run.
