Fixed Orthodontic

Lingual orthodontic maintenance method

Advances in orthodontic technology have offered new treatment options to patients over time. Fixed orthodontics was the only treatment option for a while, and removable and invisible orthodontics was later available to patients. Lingual orthodontics is among the modern orthodontics that is attracting great popularity bringing many advantages for those who care about their appearance.

Lingual orthodontics

In lingual orthodontics, brackets are placed behind the teeth to obscure and make them less noticeable leading to the growing popularity of this method. People who care about their appearance will feel better using lingual orthodontics. Another reason for the popularity of this method is that lingual orthodontic appliances are made of wind components and instruments that cause fewer problems for patients.

Lingual orthodontics is recommended to install by a highly skilled and experienced orthodontist because this orthodontic treatment should be performed by an prominent orthodontist with special knowledge and skills in this area. However, an eminent orthodontist does not recommend this method to all patients; someone who intends to undergo lingual orthodontics must have certain characteristics.

First of all, the patient should have healthy and long teeth to provide enough space for the placement of brackets behind them. Accordingly, most children and those with small teeth are not good candidates for lingual orthodontics. Secondly, there should be enough space between the tongue and teeth. Otherwise, the tongue may apply pressure to brackets, push the teeth to move, and even cause speech problems. Finally, the lingual orthodontic services and treatments by an prominent orthodontist are considerably more expensive than conventional orthodontics. One reason for the higher cost of lingual orthodontics is the customized brackets that should be fabricated for patients. Lingual orthodontics is a highly popular orthodontic method, but few people can afford its expenses.

Taking care if lingual orthodontics

Regardless of the type of orthodontic treatment, a good orthodontist will always recommend you to maintain oral hygiene and regularly clean your teeth during the treatment. When you use an orthodontic appliance, it will be more difficult to remove food debris and particles gotten stuck between teeth or beneath the appliance. The lack of regular and careful cleaning of the empty spaces of orthodontic brackets and archwires will expose your teeth to multiple dental and oral problems and diseases. You should brush your teeth after each meal and carefully remove food particles. You need to spend more time cleaning the brackets because they are more difficult to clean. Lingual brackets are placed behind the teeth where it is difficult to access, and patients should take care of them more seriously. Such patients are usually recommended to use special toothbrushes with higher cleansing power.

Lingual orthodontic appliances are placed behind the teeth, and thus impose fewer dietary restrictions than other orthodontic treatments. Nevertheless, you should follow the special diet recommended by your prominent orthodontist. It is better to avoid eating fatty, sticky, and crispy foods or those containing fine grains.

The repair cost of lingual orthodontic appliances is higher than that of other orthodontic treatments. Therefore, you are recommended to fully take care of your lingual orthodontic appliances to avoid further repair costs. A beautiful smile is worth taking care of orthodontic appliances and maintaining good oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment.
