Mini screw

One of the recent techniques in orthodontia is “Mini Screw” which has caused a great evolution in the treatment of maxillofacial abnormalities. Not much far ago for treating some of the maxillofacial abnormalities orthodontia and orthognathic surgery was required. However, now with the development of Mini screw treatment of abnormalities may be done without surgery and only by orthodontia.

Advantages of mini screw

Compared to others, placing the Mini screw in the mouth is very simple. When needed, the orthodontists can place it in the needed positions in their clinic (with the patient under local anesthesia). Mini screw’s material is titanium and the body embraces it well. Additionally, removing the Mini screw from the mouth is so simple and pain free.

Disadvantages of Mini screw

Loosening of Mini screw is one of its disadvantages though, that can be resolved by choosing a Mini screw with the appropriate length and diameter and also deciding and positioning the Mini screw in the right place and angle.

Dr. Jamilian’s discovery and Mini screw

Some of the customary techniques in the treatment of maxillary retrognathia are using a face mask and reverse chin up. There are various reports on the difficulties of using extraoral appliances. These appliances being big is part of the reason why kids can’t use them properly or get humiliated by others. Also the use of these appliances in kids wearing glasses doubles the problem. This problem is more severe in the warm seasons of the year because of the sweating under the chin strap that causes the noncooperation of the patient. This lack of properly using the extraoral appliances causes the treatment to fail and eventually the maxillary retrognathia of the patient doesn’t get resolved and it jeopardizes the patients’ health and beauty. Known complication of the treatments failure in the first place is risky for the orthodontist and then for the patient and the community and more importantly it leads to distrusting the dentistry services.

Due to this, orthodontist Dr. Jamilian began conducting research in this field. Later on, thanks to god he succeeded in discovering a new method for treating underdevelopment of the maxilla. More specifically, without the need for extraoral appliances. In this method the patient’s maxilla gets realigned more forward with the help of Mini screw and class 3 rubber bands. This method has been recorded in the Americas Patent and Trademark office and has been represented and approved in international seminars. This method in the frame of an approved research model has been accepted from the university and it also got published in the valid international journals as an article.
