Advantages and disadvantages of fixed orthodontic

A beautiful smile always increases the human face’s attraction. We have witnessed people who hide their smiles due to irregular teeth. Fortunately, there is a simple way, i.e., orthodontics, rather than surgery for resolving misaligned teeth and jaw problems. Orthodontics is a method to create a beautiful and attractive smile providing aligned and regular teeth. It has different types, including fixed and removable orthodontics (the transparent type is included in the latter). Fixed orthodontics is used to resolve the apparent defects and irregularity of the teeth, in which the jaw shape is modified, and the teeth are aligned, resulting in the prevention of teeth disorders and decay.

Fixed orthodontics is performed using wire and brackets, and in contrast to general belief, this treatment is not limited to children; instead, it is effective at any age. Fixed orthodontics is a suitable method for people with severe or even acute maxillofacial abnormalities. If performed at lower ages, there will be no need for costly and bothersome surgeries in the future.

Orthodontics has two types of fixed and removable, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Removable orthodontics is used in children as their jawbones are more flexible and easily changed by the pressure implied by orthodontics and brackets. Fixed orthodontics is ideal for adults whose bones are more rigid and less flexible against dental changes. As a result, the pressure applied by fixed orthodontics is relatively high and hence can relocate the teeth and bone in the shortest possible time.

Fixed orthodontics advantages

As you know, fixed orthodontics aligns the teeth, and in addition to beautifying the smile, it provides oral health and decreases the risk of gum disease. It is noteworthy that fixed orthodontics is guaranteed because the teeth are placed in their proper location with a meager chance of returning to the initial position. Fixed orthodontics is a safe method and reduces tooth damage because it moves the tooth in controlled directions. As an essential point, cleaning the teeth is much easier after completion of the fixed orthodontic treatment period, and as a result, the teeth lifespan increases.

Fixed orthodontics disadvantages

The treatment period of fixed orthodontics usually takes longer than that of removable orthodontics. Fixed orthodontics is generally associated with temporary pain, which is relieved over time. However, the pain is increased after each session when the dentist fastens the brackets. If oral health is not observed during fixed orthodontics, the teeth may be unpleasantly discolored due to the effect of brackets. Difficult eating is another disadvantage of fixed orthodontics. Sometimes people may have difficulty speaking during treatment. Fixed orthodontics can be broken due to eating and biting hard foods, which will incur additional costs for the patient.

Why fixed orthodontics?

The orthodontist usually suggests fixed orthodontics to align the teeth. Jaw abnormalities are usually treated with removable orthodontics, whereas teeth disorders are modified through fixed orthodontics. Fixed orthodontics is performed with high-power and high-accuracy instruments compared to other orthodontics instruments. The treatment duration of fixed orthodontics is much shorter than removable orthodontics. Fixed orthodontic brackets are permanently placed on the teeth and cannot be removed by the patient, unlike removable orthodontics.
